Recently I joined a group on Facebook aimed at connecting writers and reviewers. I shouldn’t be requesting review copies of anything, ‘cos I’m supposed to be using my ‘spare’ time to edit and proofread for Dark Continents and read slush for Dark Continents AND Dark Moon Digest and write for myself and…
But one cannot be selfish. One cannot ask other reviewers to review one’s book without offering the same in return. So here it is – my first book review since high school, for ‘Time And Yon Serpent: Serpent’s Tail’ by M. J. Holmes.
As explained in the preface, Micah Holmes’s novel ‘Tyme and Yon Serpent: Serpent’s Tail’ is based on an obscure Role Playing Game. If you’re not an RPG player, don’t let this put you off.
Holmes consciously and gleefully borrows from a wide range of fantasy tropes and famous works to create this fast-paced homage to the genre. Seasoned fantasy fans will spot the sly take on the footnotes in ‘Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell’, a nod towards ‘The NeverEnding Story’, a wink at Gollum from ‘The Lord of the Rings’, a Terry Pratchett reference, and probably many more that I’m not even aware of. There is magic. There is sword play. There are even zombies.
This is a fun read aimed squarely at fantasy aficionados which could easily have YA crossover appeal.
So does anyone want to review my review?
